Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Climate change is one of the most pressing environmental issues facing the world today, and its impacts are increasingly being felt in many regions of Nigeria, including Minna, Niger State. The effects of climate change, such as unpredictable weather patterns, droughts, flooding, and increased temperatures, are detrimental to agriculture, livelihoods, and overall community health in rural areas. Development communication has become a pivotal tool in raising awareness about climate change, especially in rural communities, where knowledge about climate change and its impacts may be limited. Through the use of strategic communication methods, such as community engagement, radio programs, workshops, and social media platforms, development communication can play an essential role in educating and empowering communities to adopt adaptive measures. In Minna LGA, local government, NGOs, and development agencies have initiated several climate change awareness campaigns to help the community understand the effects of environmental changes and the importance of sustainable practices. This study seeks to explore the role of development communication in promoting climate change awareness in Minna, examining the effectiveness of these communication strategies and identifying the barriers to their success (Abubakar & Musa, 2023).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite various climate change awareness campaigns in Minna, there remains a significant gap in the level of understanding and awareness of climate change impacts and mitigation strategies among the local population. This study seeks to investigate the role of development communication in raising climate change awareness and promoting sustainable practices among the residents of Minna. The problem lies in the insufficient use of targeted communication strategies that resonate with local communities, which may hinder the effectiveness of climate change initiatives. Therefore, understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the current communication strategies is crucial for improving the implementation of future campaigns.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will offer insights into the effectiveness of development communication in addressing climate change challenges in rural communities, specifically in Minna. By identifying effective strategies and barriers to successful campaigns, this research will inform the design of more effective communication strategies that can enhance climate change awareness and promote sustainable practices in rural areas. The findings will be useful for policymakers, development agencies, and NGOs focused on climate change education.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is confined to Minna LGA in Niger State and focuses on climate change awareness and the communication strategies used to promote it. Limitations include potential biases from participants' perspectives and challenges in accessing remote areas with limited communication infrastructure.
